The panel, part of the 1922 Revisited: Live Arts Program, will explore performance as a means of challenging colonial narratives, recovering marginalized histories and reactivating indigenous knowledge.
Third Space Art Foundation, in partnership with the Centre for Contemporary Art Lagos (CCA Lagos), is pleased to present Decolonizing the Archive through Performance, a panel discussion exploring the role of performance in challenging colonial narratives and expanding understandings of the archive.
Part of the 1922 Revisited: Live Arts Program, the event will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 10:30 am to 12:15 pm at the Centre for Contemporary Art Lagos, 9 McEwen Street, Yaba, Lagos.
The panel will consider how performance art can challenge the perspectives embedded in colonial archives while recovering histories, memories and forms of knowledge that have been marginalized or excluded. It will also examine how restitution might extend beyond the physical return of cultural heritage to include the embodied reactivation of displaced memories, cultural practices and indigenous knowledge systems.
Taking the 1922 Revisited program and Jelili Atiku’s Eyes No Dey Forget Wetin Heart See as points of departure, the conversation will explore performance as a mode of contesting dominant historical narratives, transmitting indigenous knowledge and imagining new collective futures through African epistemologies.
The discussion will bring together artists and cultural practitioners whose work engages performance, scholarship, filmmaking and contemporary artistic practice.
