Third Space Art Foundation, in partnership with CCA Lagos, presents 1922 Revisited: West Africa Edition, featuring a performance by Nigerian multidisciplinary artist Jelili Atiku. Titled Eyes No Dey Forget Wetin Heart See, the performance will take place at the National Museum, Lagos, on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, as part of the ART X pre-programme events.
A Luminous Pilgrimage Through the City
Eyes No Dey Forget Wetin Heart See features a mystical figure embodying the energy of the earth, embarking on a “Luminous Pilgrimage”—a deliberate, trance-like journey through urban landscapes. Drawing on Orisha rituals, psychogeography, and the concept of dérive, the performance invites audiences to experience the city beyond its familiar routes and meanings.
Through this immersive, ritualistic journey, participants are encouraged to surrender to the city’s rhythms, explore the emotional resonance of spaces, confront societal expectations, and reconnect with their inner selves. The performance considers how our environments shape our experiences and influence our understanding of identity, belonging, and transformation.
Drawing on African artistic traditions and epistemologies, Atiku examines cultural identity, fragmentation, reclamation, and restitution. The work challenges dominant narratives, reframes the politics of looking, and creates space for histories and voices that have been silenced or marginalised.
At its core, Eyes No Dey Forget Wetin Heart See is an act of historical reclamation, questioning the colonial frameworks through which African art and knowledge have been interpreted. Through radical presence and mystical expression, the performance opens up possibilities for renewed understanding, cultural self-determination, and reconnection with African ways of knowing.
The Luminous Pilgrimage becomes a site of resistance and discovery, inviting audiences to reconsider their relationship with the city, its histories, and the stories that shape collective memory.
