The CCA Lagos, in partnership with IFRA-Nigeria, launched the Archives Digitisation Project on April 24, 2026. Titled “Institutional Memory and the Dynamics of Agency in Contemporary Arts Archives,” the event gathered artists, researchers, curators, and cultural practitioners to discuss the evolving and active role of archives. Rather than static storage, archives were considered dynamic sites where memory, power, and cultural production intersect to reshape narratives continuously.
The discussion highlighted the urgency of digitisation as both a preservation method and a way to broaden access and redefine ownership of cultural histories. Participants reflected on how institutional memory can be engaged, challenged, and reimagined to empower communities and encourage new forms of participation.
The event attracted a vibrant audience and fostered meaningful dialogue beyond the formal sessions, addressing archival gaps, documentation politics, and the importance of inclusive storytelling in contemporary African art.
This project represents a key milestone for CCA Lagos in its dedication to preserving and providing access to critical artistic and intellectual histories. It strengthens the institution’s role as a hub for research, discourse, and innovation in the cultural sector. The digitisation process is expected to be completed by the end of May.
