As part of the ongoing Ka Ọ Dị Mgbe Anyi Gafụ Ozo (Until We Meet Again) exhibition, the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos (CCA Lagos) will host a special pre-program film screening of Back on Home Soil (2023), a poignant work by Nigerian filmmaker and artist Ofem Ubi.
Set in Ikom, Cross River State, Back on Home Soil is a deeply personal exploration of memory, family history, and the enduring impact of loss. Through a rich tapestry of handwritten records, photographs, poetry, and moving images, Ubi reflects on the lives and legacies preserved within his family archive. The film emerged from an earlier poetry and photography project and has evolved into a moving meditation on how individuals and communities navigate grief while seeking continuity and belonging.
At the heart of the film is a reflection on the absence left by the filmmaker’s grandmother and the ways in which memory becomes a vessel for preserving stories across generations. Through this intimate lens, Back on Home Soil raises broader questions about heritage, homecoming, and the fragile relationship between remembrance and forgetting.
This screening forms part of the public programme accompanying Ka Ọ Dị Mgbe Anyi Gafụ Ozo (Until We Meet Again), an exhibition that examines themes of memory, transition, and collective histories. Audiences are invited to engage with Ubi’s thoughtful and evocative work as it extends the exhibition’s conversations beyond the gallery space.
