As World Dance Day approaches, the Guild of Nigerian Dancers (GND) has announced plans to host World Dance Day 2026. The three-day event hosted by EkoGond and curated by Afrocan will bring together cultural leaders, dancers, and a community of creatives across Nigeria.
The organizers will host the three-day event from April 27th to 29th, 2026, under the theme “We Move.” As the title depicts, “We Move” will be used to celebrate dance not just as a tool of expression but with a deep performance that reminds us about our heritage and collective identity.
The programme is a space for reflection, collaboration, and exchange among practitioners who see dance and movement as a form for amplifying culture.
According to the organisers, the theme “We Move” reflects the deep historical role of movement in African societies. Long before formal language systems emerged, the human body served as a primary form of communication—expressing emotion, storytelling, and community memory through rhythm and motion.
The event will feature participation from several state chapters of the Guild, including groups from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti, Delta, and Kwara states, alongside renowned Nigerian dance companies and community-based collectives.
While the venues for the celebration are yet to be announced, organisers say the gathering aims to strengthen the network of professional dancers and cultural practitioners while showcasing the diversity and richness of Nigeria’s dance traditions.
With performances, discussions, and collaborative sessions planned throughout the three days, World Dance Day 2026 promises to highlight the enduring role of dance as both cultural heritage and contemporary artistic practice in Nigeria.
